By the time Street Fighter Alpha 2 came along, a lot of versus-fighting fans, and Street Fighter fans in particular, were getting a bit jaded. It felt like they were using the same characters and moves over and over again, and they likely were. So the introduction of Street fighter Alpha 2 was a breath of fresh air. The Alpha series was started as a prequel to Street Fighter II, taking place between the first and second installments of the game. The original Alpha alone was a bit of a disappointment. It lacked in the number of characters available and also lacked in punch. Street Fighter Alpha 2 had no such problems. Graphically it took the entire genre and the Street Fighter games to a brand new level. The music also turned out to be top-notch. On top of that the gameplay was much improved over the original Alpha. Besides the edition of many new characters, you also had the three hidden characters from the original Alpha game, Dan, Akuna and Bison. The new custom combo moves were a big improvement over the original Street Fighter Alpha and made for much more compelling game play. The entire package in Alpha 2 was a game of significantly higher quality than the original Alpha. Being the middle-child in a successful gaming trilogy might not be the best position to be in. However Street Fighter Alpha 2 handles its positioning just fine. The original Alpha game was a bit of a risk for Capcom and potentially not as successful as they might have liked. However they were able to build on that foundation with Alpha 2 by adding more characters, adding more special moves and refining the overall gameplay. The outcome is a much better game. Best of all they set the table for the best game of the trilogy which ends up being the final chapter, Street Fighter Alpha 3. While I would not label this a must-have for an average gamer, I would say any Street Fighter fan would find their library lacking with out this title on their shelves. So if you are a real fan get this one and give it a spin you will not be disappointed. I would recommend getting all 3 of the Alpha games, if for nothing more than playing them all the way through to see how much the series improved as it went from Alpha, to Alpha 2 to Alpha 3.
